Stanley Mission to Nistowiak Falls

About this Canoe Route

Stanley Mission to Nistowiak Falls

Explore ancient aboriginal rock paintings. Shoot class I/II rapids. Stand beside breathtaking Nistowiak Falls. Bucket list trip indeed!

This trip typically starts at the boat launch in Stanley Mission on Mountain Lake, which is directly across from historical Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Paddle across to view the Church up close or stop to check it out. Additionally, you can view aboriginal rock painting sites 4 km north of Stanley Mission on Mountain Lake & before Stanley Rapids.

At Stanley Rapids you can camp at one of the route's most popular sites, located on the smaller set of rapids, dubbed Little Stanley. If you started your Nistowiak Falls canoe trip later in the day, this a good place to set up for the night. Portages can be found on both sets of rapids -Big Stanley/Little Stanley- with a compostable outhouse at the Little Stanley campground. Both sets of rapids can be difficult to traverse, and should only be attempted by those with experience. From Stanley Rapids, you will cross Drope Lake and make your way through a couple of bays until you get to Frog Narrows, a class I/II swift water area. There aren't much for large waves in this area, but keep an eye out for whirlpools!

After passing Frog Narrows, you'll make your way across Nistowiak Lake to Jim's Camp at the bottom of Nistowiak Falls. To view these picturesque, powerful falls, find the portage at the south side of the camp that leads to Iskwatikan Lake.
